The role The Business Operations Tooling team is a product-focused team dedicated to building and improving the essential tools required by the Operational teams. Their primary goal is to enable each Operational person to efficiently maximise the amount of high-volume business customers they can serve by centralizing data, simplifying workflows, and automating time-consuming tasks. The initial phase focuses on leveraging Salesforce to quickly deliver value before developing bespoke internal tools. The Engineering Lead is responsible for the overall technical architecture, development standards, and successful implementation of the roadmap's technical deliverables (e.g., proactive alerting, automated data population, assignment tooling). They would also be responsible for hiring and managing the engineers required for the team and working with cross-functional people, including product, design and analytics. Key Responsibilities: Technical: Defining the technical approach for building tools, and consider short term wins vs long term initiatives. The role is hands-on . Product Roadmap: Actively participating in product definition and roadmap of the team. Team Leadership: Leading and mentoring the team of engineers (Individual Contributors), ensuring code quality, and driving project completion. Cross-Team Coordination: Working with cross-functional teams (including design, product, analytics) to build and integrate the tools. Required Experience: Experience in leading and mentoring software engineers, as you enjoy helping others grow and succeed. Strong communication style, experience leading one or multiple teams, working across multiple functions. Experience in backend engineering and system architecture, with a proven track record of delivering scalable solutions, ideally in a fast-paced environment or for internal tooling. Experience with designing complex systems. Experience with database handling. Experience with API design. Experience witha asynchronous messaging. Good conflict resolution and problem solving skills. Nice to Have: Experience with JVM languages (Java, Kotlin). Financial background is not a must, but a good plus Interested? The role We're looking for an experienced Senior Backend Engineer to join our Rules Platform Team. This team is responsible for Wise's critical rules engine , which includes the tool used to manage our risk assessment rules . As a senior member of this team, you will be a key technical voice. You will lead and contribute to impactful, cross-functional engineering initiatives , drive critical system architecture and technical design decisions , and ensure high service standards by monitoring and optimizing the system performance . You will also actively participate in strategic planning , shaping the product roadmap and defining the future evolution of the platform. What will you be working on? You will join the team at an exciting time of growth , as we scale our core risk assessment capabilities. The core challenge is to evolve our rules engine and internal libraries to support growing demand and complexity from teams across Wise. Your immediate impact will be to: Drive Complex Initiatives : Lead the design and implementation of complex backend initiatives that form the foundation of our risk platform. Own Core Components : Take ownership of maintaining and evolving the internal libraries and shared components consumed by multiple teams, ensuring they are robust, scalable, and well-documented. Design for Scale : Contribute directly to the architectural design and scaling of our risk assessment services, ensuring they meet high standards for performance, reliability, and data consistency. Collaborate for Impact: Work as a key technical partner with multiple stakeholders—including Product, FinCrime, and other engineering teams—to deliver robust, cross-functional solutions. You'll work in a collaborative environment where you can influence key technical decisions, mentor other engineers, and help define how we scale our platform. It's a strong opportunity to grow into greater technical leadership and work on complex, meaningful problems at scale. Qualifications What do you need? Strong proficiency in JVM-based languages (e.g., Java, Kotlin). Proven experience maintaining internal libraries or shared components consumed by multiple teams. Experience working with Kafka and SQL databases in complex backend systems where reliability and data consistency are critical. Strong mentorship skills with a passion for supporting and leveling up junior engineers. The ability to prioritize, evaluate tradeoffs, and make informed technical decisions, and comfort in leading technical discussions and architecture proposals. Proactivity and a collaborative mindset, with experience working closely with Product Managers on decision-making. Some extra skills that would be useful: Experience with the Spring framework. Experience building or working with custom DSLs (Domain-Specific Languages). Background in the FinCrime domain, risk decisioning teams, or regulatory environments where auditability and traceability are important. Additional information For everyone, everywhere.
